Muscle Beach Venice - originally known as Venice Beach Weightlifting Pen - is an outdoor platform and sandbox for pumping iron on Ocean Front Walk, but its roots go back to 1934 and the birth of body building on the south side of the Santa Monica Pier. Working out on the equipment were hunks like Vic Tanny, Jack LaLanne and Joe Gold. Tanny opened his first fitness club in 1940 just two blocks from the beach.
