Redondo Beach claims to be where surfing was born, at least in Southern California where Henry Huntingon engaged a Hawaiian surfer in 1907 to promote his Los Angeles-Redondo-Huntington railway. Access to the 1.5-mile (2.4 km) beach is easiest around the Redondo Pier and Veterans Park as the southern end is filled with condos. The volleyball courts at South Redondo can be reached by a stairway down the bluff. Biking, windsurfing, surfing, skating, swimming, pier fishing and beach walking are also popular.
