Sunset Strip, the best known stretch of Sunset Boulevard, is a 1.5-mile (2.4 km), neon-lit section in West Hollywood between Hollywood and Beverly Hills. It is crowded with nightclubs, restaurants, boutiques, hotels and gigantic billboards known as "vanity boards." It's where the counter-culture protests of the 1960s played out and rock 'n roll began. Lana Turner supposedly was discovered at Schwab's Pharmacy, replaced by a Virgin Megastore. The Garden of Allah, a compound where Golden Age celebrities lived and partied, is a shopping mall.
