First opened in 1888, Katz's Delicatessen is a cornerstone of the downtown dining scene. The food is classic Jewish deli, and most patrons will be ordering either the corned beef or the pastrami sandwiches. The setting isn't fussy; you take a ticket and wait in line to place your order, which is served up cafeteria-style on a plastic tray. Don't miss the pickles and coleslaw.

It's an old style cafeteria in the Lower East Side. I used to go with friends just for the hot Knishes served with mustard.

Although I no longer enjoy a two in the morning heaping pastrami sandwich after a night on the Lower East Side, the memories are strong and delicious. Recommended for any 20-something out on the town or really any visitor to the city, a Katz sandwich is a special sandwich.
