The Bronx Zoo has been home to exotic animals since 1899, and is the largest metropolitan zoo in America with over 4,000 animals within its 250-acre grounds. Some of the most famous inhabitants are the Congo gorillas, Siberian tigers, cheetahs, zebras, giraffes, and African lions. Most of the animals live in open enclosures landscaped to resemble their native habitat, where they can live and grow in the social structures they were meant to form. The Congo Gorilla Forest is one of the most impressive exhibits, with two troops of these majestic apes. The earlier you get here the better, in order to avoid crowds; if you plan to make a day of it you can purchase a Total Experience Pass, which will allow you to see all of the premier exhibits for less. General admission is 17USD with extra for special exhibits. The Total Experience Pass is 21-34USD. Wednesdays are free. Hours vary with the season, check website for updates.
