The American trans woman Christine Jorgensen, born George William Jorgensen Jr., became internationally famous after her sex reassignment surgery in Copenhagen in the early 1950s. She was born and grew up in the Belmont neighborhood in the Bronx, known as the Little Italy of the Bronx in what is now a multi-family home that takes up most of the lot. She went on to become an actress, nightclub singer and trans advocate.
