Built in 1890 to honor the first American foreign missionary, Judson Memorial Church took on a new mission in the mid-20th century to champion civil rights, peace, women's rights and gay rights. In the 1980s, it was one of the few churches to recognize the AIDS crisis, creating support groups and providing funerals. Today it welcomes all sexual orientations and gender identities with about one-third of the congregation gay or lesbian. It celebrates Gay Pride with a special service each year.
