The Moorten Botanical Garden is a desert arboretum the Moortens established on the family estate in 1938. Slim Moorten was a contortionist who was one of the original Keystone Cops before retiring to Palm Springs with his biologist wife. Together they designed landscapes for Frank Sinatra and advised Walt Disney, who had a ranch in Palm Springs, on Frontierland, later Disneyland. The garden and the Moortens' Spanish-style hacienda "Cactus Castle" are popular for weddings.

Queen of Hearts, which opened in 1969 as The Desert Knight, was the first lesbian-friendly hotel in town. Gloria Swanson is said to have stayed there. Sadly it has permanently closed.
