If you have friends in high places, wangle a visit to the uber-exclusive Thunderbird Country Club, founded in 1951 with a membership flush with top Hollywood stars like Bing and Bob. If not, do a drive-by or read Robert Windeler's history of the mid-century golf course that hosted the first Women's Invitation, the Ryder Cup and the Palm Beach Classic. Designed by William Cody, the club became the model for dozens that followed and was where the golf cart was invented and the first homes built around the links (Desi and Lucy among the first to move in). The Ford Thunderbird was named after the club - the Ford chairman at the time was a member.
