Worth the drive for the experience, this cave is the third largest lava tube in North America. Choose between a short, flat walk through one of the caves or a longer, more intense walk/climb through the opposite end. Ape Cave is ideal for new to moderately experienced cavers. Be sure to bring headlamps and flashlights and don't forget fresh batteries; it's dark in there. Warm clothes are a good idea, even on summer days, as the cave's temperature hovers around 42 degrees and damp regardless of outside weather. This makes it a great outdoor adventure for off-season exploring when it's too rainy to explore Mt. St. Helens. Check for seasonal closures before embarking.
