The first Pinot Noir grapes were planted in the Willamette Valley 50 years ago and no one thought they would grow. Since then, the wine industry in the area has defied expectations with its success. Although it isn't of the same scale or reputation as California's Napa Valley, visitors and their designated drivers can partake in Portland's nearby vineyards for afternoon tastings and pristine summer picnics.
