A small affluent neighborhood of Craftsman homes and mid-century modern apartment buildings, Hillcrest is famous for its tolerance and its well-established LGBTQ community, which took root in the 1970s. Several hundred gays and lesbians marched through downtown in 1974 to protest the city's refusal to issue a parade permit. Since 2012, a large, privately funded rainbow flag has flown over the corner of University Avenue and Normal and a street was renamed to honor Harvey Milk.
