Once famous as a hippie enclave, the East Bay town of Berkeley is still a vibrant center of counter-culture. Visitors will want to check out the sprawling campus of UC Berkeley and nosh their way through the "Gourmet Ghetto," the Shattuck Ave neighborhood with a bevy of shops and restaurants. You can take BART to get here; the trip will take about 25 minutes.
