Accessible by train or bus, and a two and half hour drive south from DC, Colonial Williamsburg is the perfect day trip out of the city. This was the nation's capital during the Revolutionary Era, and today it bills itself as the largest living history museum in America. Actors in full 18C dress walk the streets and reenact the daily life of the time including blacksmiths, silversmiths, and candlemakers and coachmen. You can even rent children's costumes to immerse them in the action. There are a multitude of games for kids, including acting in plays, marching with the drums corps, and tending gardens. Farmers in costume work the land just as they did years ago.
