Deacon Maccubbin founded Lambda Rising, a LGBT bookstore, in 1974 in 300 square feet (28 m2) and moved several times, growing it to 4,800 square feet (450 m2) before closing in 2010. In 1975, it ran the world's first gay-oriented TV commercial and organized Gay Pride Day, the capital's first gay pride celebration. A shoe store is now in the space.
