Oceania is a vast watery region spotted with Pacific island paradises, Australia and New Zealand. The Polynesian Islands like Tahiti and Bora Bora are to the east, Melanesia with Fiji and Papua New Guinea to the west and the tiny Micronesian islands to the north. Australia and New Zealand are well-developed tourist destinations, but getting around the far-flung islands takes an adventuresome spirit and/or money. By air, connections are generally through Australia or New Zealand, but some direct flights leave from Los Angeles, Paris and Honolulu. Freighters, cruise ships and private yachts visit even some of the most remote islands.
