The Summer Palace, declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1998, is a square mile (2.9 sq km) of lakes, gardens and palaces, most of it water. It's a lovely escape from Beijing summers, but don't rule out a winter visit when the lakes ice over. Ten miles northeast of the center city, it can be reached by bus or Subway Line 4.
