Like most Caribbean countries, the gay scene is based out of the more urban areas. Santo Domingo's Malecon oceanfront drive is peppered with venues like Club Arena, Jay Dee's, and Parios Bar that will keep you on your feet for hours! Food around the country is absolutely mouth-watering, but lunch is the main meal of the day. Non-alcoholic drinks from the D.R. like coffee, jugo de naranja, and batidas are a not-to-be-missed way to quench your thirst while touring this beautiful country! LGBT rallies and events frequent the to-do calendar in this beautiful Caribbean country, and there is even an occasional Pride Festival. In general, the macho ethos remains strong in DR, although people are not overtly homophobic. The Conde, is the main strip in Santo Domingo's Colonial Zone; here you'll see openly queer people, congregating, parading, and so forth. If you go to provincial cities and towns like San Pedro de Macorís, San Francisco de Macorís, or the second city Santiago, you might not see the same openness toward the queer community. The best way to get a taste of this country is to tour cities big and small though, so hit the road and start soaking up the Dominican culture!
