The May 1810 revolution that led to Argentina's independence from Spain began here, then called Plaza Victoria. Today as Plaza de Mayo is continues as the center of political activity (read protests) and is flanked by the Banco de la Nación, the Palace of the Argentine National Congress, the Buenos Aires Metropolitan Cathedral and the Casa Rosada, where Evita famously addressed the crowds from the presidential balcony.
