New Year's Eve in Rio is not celebrated lightly. Around two million people gather on Copacabana Beach and honor Lemanjá - the goddess from the seas - dressing in new white clothes for good luck. A spectacular fireworks display is launched from barges in the bay offers 15 minutes of hypnotic entertainment. Concerts by famous Brazilian artists start at 6 pm and go until 3 am, sometimes including a preview from the carnival groups.
