The Palm Springs International Film Festival each January draws about 135,000 people to see international and American independent films at various venues around town. Most foreign-language Oscar nominees are screened at the festival, which was started in 1980 by Sonny Bono when he was mayor. The Palm Spring International ShortFest and Film Market is held in June.
