The Sydney Pride Festival features a full calendar of art, cinema, theater, trivia, debates, sports, fundraisers, family activities and club events at various venues around town. Smaller than the international extravaganza of the Gay & Lesbian Mardi Gras, the festival showcases the LGBT community and raises funds for various charities and organizations. It fills nearly two weeks and includes a Pride March, a remembrance day and a costume ball celebrating the Queen's birthday. The first June Pride event in Sydney was a morning protest mach and a night-time party on June 24, 1978 to commemorate the Stonewall riots, but police broke up the march.
