This church dates back to the 11th-century but received its most identifying feature - the bulbous octogonal dome - well into the 13th. The latter makes it a masterwork of what is called Rhein-Romantic. It is one of the more rewarding basilica-visits for the uninitiated, as it is easy to decipher the competing building phases of the church.
