An hour's drive southeast of the city, Lake Chapala is the largest fresh-water lake in Mexico and a popular retirement spot for ex-pats from the US and Canada. The lake, source of Guadalajara's drinking water, offers recreational activities like birdwatching, fishing and boating in a year-around temperate climate. Ajijic on the north side of the lake has cobble-stoned streets, handicrafts and art galleries.
