John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park at the northern end of Key Largo was the first undersea park in the U.S. and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Covering about 70 nautical square miles, it has 50 miles of natural mangrove wilderness trails and offers scuba diving, snorkeling, glass-bottom boat tours and rentals of powerboats, paddle boards, canoes and sit-on-top kayaks. The park is open from 8 a.m. to sunset with a per-car entrance fee of $8, $4 for motorcycles and sole-occupant cars, and $2 for pedestrians and cyclists. It is about an hour's drive from Miami.
