Ten miles (16 km) east of Palm Springs in the Indio Hills, the Coachella Valley Preserve covers 17,000 acres (nearly 7,000 ha) that includes the Thousand Palm Oasis. Open only in the cooler months, it has over 25 miles (40 km) of hiking trails and guided tours by docents.
