Soweto, a sprawling collection of neighborhoods southwest of downtown. was a black township under apartheid where riots erupted in 1976. Now home to 2 million people, it is a popular tourist attraction with shops, the Credo Mutwa Cultural Village, the Orlando Towers and the Nelson Mandela House. Each March it hosts the Soweto Wine & Lifestyle Festival. A wide variety of tours are available.
