The Dom is not the only giant hunk of sacred architecture in Cologne. From the 5th to the 13th century AD, the city saw the rise of twelve different Roman Catholic churches in the so-called "Romanesque" style, and though none quite match the Gothic pomp of the city's star, each represents an individual, theoretical approaches to church building and can be viewed as a sort of catalog of an evolving Germanic architectural taste over the centuries. The visitor can tackle it all on their own, but guided tours are available and many of the churches are within walking distance of each other.
