Tres Palos Lagoon and the Papagayo River meet the Pacific Ocean at Barra Vieja, is a rustic beach village about 17 miles (27 k.) south of Acapulco. The lagoon is three times the size of the Bay of Acapulco. Its wetlands are a great spot for observing exotic wildlife and a sea turtle rescue center is nearby.
