The Primavera Forest - "Guadalajara's lungs" - is a pine and oak wildlife refuge 7.5 miles (12 km) west of the city. Covering about 140 square miles (36,000 hectares), it offers hiking, mountain biking, bizarre rock formations and swimming in icy rivers or the thermal Rio Caliente. Wildlife includes white-tailed deer and about 140 different kinds of birds.
