Vizcaya Museum and Gardens on Biscayne Bay just south of Rickenbacker Causeway is the estate built a century ago by John Deering, whose family fortune came from farm machinery. He and his openly gay decorator Paul Chalfin scoured Europe for treasures needed to create an Italian Renaissance palace out of a mangrove swamp. Until recently it was the site of the White Ball, one of the oldest and largest AIDS benefits. Its formal gardens are a popular wedding site.
