A former military base in Queens, the secluded sands of Fort Tilden are often referred to as one of New York's "best kept secrets."  You'll see a few hipsters here and there, but if you can get here, you'll probably have most of the beach to yourself.  There aren't any lifeguards, so stay alert when swimming.
