The Dali Museum boasts the most comprehensive collection of Salvador Dali's work outside of Europe, including 7 of the 18 paintings considered "masterworks." Begun as a private collection, it opened to the public in 1982 in a marine warehouse downtown. Today nearly 100 oil paintings, more than 100 watercolors and drawings and over 1,000 other Dali creations are housed in an impressive, storm-resistant building designed by Yann Weymouth at a cost of more than $30 million. Its all-glass entry soars 75 feet (23 m) with a spiral staircase under the skylight.
