The heated 25-meter public swimming pool at the Long Street Baths opened in 1908 with the Turkish baths added in 1929. The facility in a Victorian building with Art Nouveau signage is still in business - between a gas station and a backpacker hostel. Pool entry is only R22 (US$1.60). The Turkish baths, sauna and plunge pool are R60 (US4.25) an hour. The baths are reserved for women Tuesday am, Saturday and Monday. During apartheid when homosexuality was illegal, this was a popular cruising or "cottaging" spot.
