The Hong Kong Dragon Boat Carnival began as an international dragon boat race in the 1970s and has mushroomed into a major international athletic competition and party with around 4,000 athletes from 14 countries and regions participating in 2015 and lots of collateral fun in a fancy dress race, a tug-of-war and a beer festival with live performers, a drinking contest and a dry-land dragon boat challenge.
