On a peninsula between the Bays of Villevranche and Beaulieu, the rose-colored Villa Ephrussi de Rothschid and its nine gardens were built by Baroness Béatrice de Rothschild in the early days of the 20th century. She willed the property, its antique furniture, Old Masters, sculpture and rare porcelain collection to the Institut de France. The gardens, each with a different theme, have been classified as Notable Gardens of France. Open to the public and home of a summer opera festival, it can be reached from Nice by car, bus (#81) or rail (Beaulieu-sur-Mer) and is often combined on tours with the Matisse and Chagall Museums in Cimiez.
