Towering over the Fischmarkt in the Altstadt is Groß St. Martin, an impressive piece of Romanesque church-building that would only pale in comparison to an attention-hog like the Dom. Its foundations date to around 960 AD, and rest on the remains of a Roman Chapel that was built on what used to be an island in the Rhine. The current building, with its soaring crossing tower as the focal point, was erected in the 12th century and was so badly destroyed during the war, there were debates about whether to leave its ruins as a monument.
