The center of La Gomera is covered with a laurel forest, springs and streams suggest how Europe and North Africa may have looked - shrouded in clouds and mist - millions of years ago. The Garajonay National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, covers 11 per cent of the island and is accessible through a wide network of viewpoints, recreational areas and well-marked trails of varying lengths. Load up on water and snacks before you go a-wandering. Guided tours can be arranged.
