The most important cultural institution for Brazilian Arts, the Museu Nacional de Belas Artes house a solid sampling of the Portuguese Royal Collection, brought over by King John VI from Portugal during the transfer of the Court from Lisbon to Rio in the early 19th century. Nowadays the museum has over 20,000 pieces including sculptures, paintings, drawings and prints ranging from the middle ages to contemporary art.
