West Hollywood covers only 1.9 square miles (c. 5 km2) but into that real estate is packed perhaps the greatest concentration of gay hotels, nightspots, shopping, dining and events. About 40 per cent of its residents identify as LGBTQ with the population often tripling on weekends as gays from Los Angeles and beyond pour into the small city. It hosts the largest Halloween street party in the nation and a Pride parade started in 1970, not to mention the Oscars with the Elton John AIDS Academy Awards Party. "The L Word," the precedent-setting TV series about lesbians, was set in West Hollywood. It's home to historic party places like The Abbey and also to repositories of LGBTQ history in its public library and the June L. Mazer Lesbian Archives. Bordered to the west by Beverley Hills and to the east by Hollywood, it has its own tourist attractions like the Sunset Strip, Chateau Marmont and celebrity-attracting boutiques in the West Hollywood Design District.
