The 1504-room Fontainbleau (pronounced "blue," not "blow,") is in a class by itself, rich in history, architectural detail and luxurious resort offerings. It was built on Millionaire's Row by bigger-than-life Ben Novak and designed by bigger-than-life Morris Lapidus in 1954 and has appeared as itself in countless movie and TV productions, including "Goldfinger" and "Surfside 6." Yes, it has had its very public ups and downs, including a bankruptcy; but a two-year $1 billion refurbishing put it back in the lux lane even though rooms are smallish by 21st century standards.
