The 22-acre Jungle Island attraction on Watson Island on MacArthur Causeway began as Parrott Jungle, a pioneering theme park that opened in 1936 in a southern suburb. The new version downtown still offers photo ops of parrots perched on tourists' shoulders, but it also has three animal shows, a simulated Everglades walk, a petting zoo, an Orangutan school, a squirrel monkey encounter and a private beach and water park on Biscayne Bay. Open 365 days a year, hours can vary according to the weather. General admission starts at $26.95 with add-ons for special inter-active activities. The original site in Pinehurst is now a lush city park on the National Register of Historic Places.
