The Central Park Zoo-easily accessible at the southeast corner of the park-is a classic addition to any child's New York visit. The first zoo to open in the city, it was founded in the mid-1800s with an odd collection of animals donated by wealthy patrons. Today this urban zoo offers penguins, polar bears, tropical monkeys, snow leopards, sea lions and more, all in an intimate setting that brings visitors up close and personal to the animals. You should buy your tickets online in advance, which will allow you to skip the long lines. Be sure to check out the petting zoo just north of the musical clock. Admission is 38-48USD. Open daily 10-5.
