The opulent Palais Garnier, more commonly known as the Paris Opera, was the world's the largest opera house and theater when it opened in 1875. Operas, ballets and concerts continue to be performed in 1,979-seat venue although much scheduling has moved to the Opera Bastille. Palais Garnier, named for its architect, is also a museum of art and architecture, which can be visited during the day.
