Nothing is quite as nostalgic of Old Europe as the Christmas markets: quaint, village-like outdoor shopping grounds that begin to go up all around the city at the start of December (usually the last monday before the Advent). Not only are various old-school crafts on display, such as pewter-pouring and wreath-binding, there are countless stands offering traditional seasonal foods, such as mulled wine (Glühwein) and roasted chestnuts. There is a Gay and Lesbian version near Schaafenstraße, and an "anlternative" market in the Stadtpark.
