The 70-acre Ciutadella or Citadel Park, the first public green space in the city, was created in the mid-19th century where Philip V had erected a fortress. Its attractions include the zoo, winding paths, a monumental waterfall, a lake with rental boats, a greenhouse, the Catalan Parliament, a bandstand named in remembrance of Sonia Rescalvo Zafra, a transsexual murdered by right-wing extremists on 6 October 1991 and the LGBT Memorial. The Museum of Modern Art is housed in the parliament building. In the middle of the park is "Desconsol" (Distress), a 1907 sculpture by Josep Llimona, influenced by Rodin.
