Sagrada Familia is an architectural work in progress, begun in 1882, taken over in 1883 by Antoni Gaudí who combined Gothic and Art Nouveau elements in the often controversial design. The church was less than one quarter finished when he died in 1926. Other architects have continued the work, but the earliest it might be completed is 2026 - if then. "My client is not in a hurry," Gaudí said. UNESCO named it a World Heritage Site; Pope Benedict XVI in 2010 consecrated it as a "minor basilica" (less than a cathedral). It opens at 9 a.m. daily, tickets required.
