Canarians have special reason to make Columbus Day a national holiday. San Sebastian was Christopher Columbus's last stop before setting out across the uncharted Atlantic in 1492. He also visited the island on his voyages in 1493 and 1498. La Gomera prides itself on being the Isla Colombina. "From Here Columbus Set Out" is written on the capital's coat of arms.
