The Gran Vía - known as the street that never sleeps - is Madrid's Broadway with cinemas and theaters lining the strip from Plaza to de Callao to Plaza de España. Teatro Compac Gran Vía is one of the oldest theatres in the city, dating from 1944. Some of Broadway's greatest hits have been staged Teatro Lope de Vega and Teatro Coliseum, built in 1932 as a movie house. Locally generated favorites like "Hoy No Me Puedo Levantar," based on the songs of the pop band Mecano, played at the Rialto. You'll also find lots of upscale shopping along the street and outstanding examples of early 20th century architecture.
