Originally a simple fishing village, the Old Town of Sitges - with its charming cobblestone streets and whitewashed houses - has a number of historic buildings, but some of the most impressive buildings date from late 19th to early 20th century like the Palau Maricel, built in 1919 for a millionaire art collector and today a conference venue. Guided tours of the building take place on Sundays. The late 19th century Mercat Veil (Old Market) on Plaça Ajuntament is now an exhibition center. Calle Major leads from Plaça Ajuntament to Plaça Cap de la Vila where a number of quaint streets invite strolling, shopping, dining or clubbing.
